This piece follows Cat Vitebsky's exploration into themes & stories of Greek Mythology.
In Greek mythology, Pitys was an Oread nymph who was transformed into a mountain pine or fir tree after fleeing the advances of the god Pan. She was a beloved nymph of the god Pan, known for her beauty and her refusal of his affections. The transformation into a tree symbolized her escape and dedication to purity, as the tree was sacred to the gods.
After originally sculpting the piece in clay Cat casts wax versions to which she adds pine branches from Greece. Then a final mold is made where molten bronze is poured. Burning away the pine branches and wax we are left with this wonderful sculpture, each edition unique from the last.
